Janet Adler
Après avoir beaucoup pratiqué la danse durant sa jeunesse, Janet Adler se consacre à des études d’orthophonie. Son premier contact avec le mouvement comme manifestation de l’inconscient a lieu en 1963, lorsqu’elle rencontre Marian Chace (1896-1970), danseuse et pionnière de la danse-thérapie au St Elizabeth’s Hospital à Washington, auprès de qui elle va se former.
Pendant dix ans (1963-1973), elle exerce comme danse – et mouvement – thérapeute dans une crèche à Washington, avec de jeunes adultes psychotiques à Stockbridge dans le Massachusetts, puis des enfants autistes dans le cadre de la Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic de l’Université de Pittsburgh, où elle achève par ailleurs un Master en développement de l’enfant. En 1968, elle produit et réalise un film sur sa recherche avec les enfants autistes, « Looking for Me » (Expressive Media Inc, 1968). Peu après, elle découvre l’épistémologie somatique avec le psychologue John Weir et le mouvement authentique avec Mary Starks Whitehouse, danseuse et danse – et mouvement – thérapeute. Très proche d’elle jusqu’à sa mort en 1979, elle fonde le Mary Starks Whitehouse Institute à Northampton dans le Massachusetts afin d’en diffuser l’enseignement. Ce sera la première école consacrée à l’étude et à la pratique du Mouvement authentique, qu’elle dirigera jusqu’en 1987.
After more than fifteen years of exploration, Janet Adler founded the Discipline of Authentic Movement, which she taught from 1986 to 2006 in Sebastopol, Northern California, where she now lives. Her approaches are manifold: advanced theoretical and practical studies, group supervision and deepening of the relationship between the Discipline of Authentic Movement and mystical text, mystical dance, kundalini, initiation processes, Jewish mysticism, Zen and psychotherapeutic practices. During this period, she also worked at the Santa Rosa hospice as a nursing auxiliary, then as an ecumenical chaplain, and made another film, “Still Looking” (Expressive Media Inc., 1988), introducing the Discipline. At the same time, she completed her doctorate in mystical studies at the Union Institute (1992).
Janet Adler has regularly presented the Discipline of Authentic Movement at conferences and seminars in private and public institutions, universities and clinics, in North America and abroad. In 2013, she took the next step, founding “Circles of Four”, an international training and research program for those wishing to teach the discipline. Based on Galiano Island in British Columbia since March 2006, she teaches as a teacher-in-residence at retreats she organizes. Locally, she also runs a bereavement program for the dying and their loved ones.
She is the author of two books, “Offering from the Conscious Body: The Discipline of Authentic Movement” (Inner Traditions, 2002), translated into several languages, notably in French at Contredanse Editions, “Vers un corps conscient, la Discipline du mouvement authentique” (2016); and “Arching Backward: The Mystical Initiation of a Contemporary Woman” (Inner Traditions, 1995).
