Workshop from 26 oct. to 06 nov. 2009 with Soto Hoffman

Anna Halprin has been impacting, stretching and changing the Dance world since the
mid 1950's. She has influenced generations of dancers and how they view dance.
Ms Halprin challenged the relationship between dance and theater, audience and
performer, explored the relationship between dance and ritual; the use of dance as ritual
to heal divisions among people and to bring communities together in a common
purpose and intention. Anna opened the door that said dance was more than technique,
that all of us had the potential to dance our dance. She ushered in dance as a tool in
healing through confronting her own cancer and helping others to empower their healing
force with and through dance. She took dance out of the studio and into the streets,
beaches and forests of Northern California. She took out the rocking chairs and got
seniors dancing. Without question Anna Halprin has been one of, if not the pivotal
figure, in realizing the full potential of what dance is in 2009. And at 89 years of age she is still dancing and an inspiration to all those who come in contact with her.

This workshop will present an introduction into the approach to movement developed by
Anna Halprin over the past 60 plus years .
This will include but not limited to
Movement Ritual: a structured sequence of movements that increases awareness
of movement, range of motion, open and soften the BodyMind, flexibility and fluidity, and
serves as a foundation for creative movement explorations.
Life/Art Process: Life/Art Process was developed by Anna, Larry and Daria
Halprin, teachers and members of the Tamalpa Institute as an approach to the creative
process that is grounded in movement and dance, and includes drawing, painting,
writing, voice and spoken word. As Life informs our Art, the Life/Art Process recognizes
that our Art has the potential to inform how we live our life. Living our Life in a more
awake and empowered manner is the heart of the work.
Movement Studies: exploring the elements and principles of space & time, rhythm
& force, inertia & momentum, body part articulation, and range of motion.
Body Part Exploration and Self Portraits: developing awareness of anatomy
and posture, relationship of body parts to each other and to the whole body. Personal
themes and metaphors associated with each body part, relationship of body parts to
feeling and imagination. Images are danced as well as drawn.
